The Human Plague Bearer Time Capsule

The speech was accompanied by a clip from The Matrix and segments of the docu-film Blind Spot (@ 33:00 & 1:20:00)

the INTRODUCTION

There is a movie that provides an alternative view of the human race and our relationship with Mother Nature. The film depicts a distant planet that has closely watched the surface of the Earth evolve over time. What would this evolution look like if the entire visual history of our planet was played for us at light speed? It would seem as if the forests are disappearing, the skies are graying, and the nights seem infected by bright yellow spots. Some sort of virus has proclaimed dominance over the various ecosystems on the planet and continues to spread. The planet seems doomed, controlled by a wreckless plague humanity. This alternative story of the planet provides the context for which my time capsule exists.

the CONTAINER, MODE OF DELIVERY, & LOCATION

My capsule will take the form of a rabid virus. This virus spreads its contents to all other living organisms. It does not harm or destroy anything; it just acts as an agent, planting a biological container. Those entities infected by the virus will also obtain the characteristics of the virus. Therefore, they can also implant this newly obtained bio-artifact on others. The container will contain my digital DNA sequence, my will, a textual biography, and my personal portfolio website. The end result; the virus will consume my body, the germs I leave behind, everything the germs touch, everything those things touch, and so on, and so on I will be a physical plague bearer, leaving trails of my existence everywhere. Eventually the entire planet will be consumed by my personal artifacts, my identity I will become Mother Nature and I will outlive any other living thing on the planet.

the FUTURE

The point of my time capsule is to act as an agent for change. By providing an alternative history of the planet and exemplifying it in my project, I can reveal the extremely negative relationship we have with Mother Nature. Why are we not in balance with our ecosystem? Why are companies still able to sell us throw-away commodities that do not stand the test of time? As a population, why do we take our footprint for granted? Why do we still use paper as much as we do? What is the purpose of mass-producing and mass-use of harmful materials like styrofoam, plastic, or nuclear waste? If someone from a distant planet visited us, what would they think? Would a sophisticated being from another universe see us as a virus? Sometimes it would seem we are so stuck on being an individual, we forget about the bigger picture. We all inhabit the planet together and our individual actions affect others whether or not we actually see the effect. Instead of creating a history of plague bearers, we can start creating our own alternative; a history of equilibrium and sustainable life.
