2011 State of the Word

Every year the creator of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg gives a State of the Word Address. And so what does this years address tell us about the future of WordPress? WP now powers 14.7% of the top million websites in the world, up from 8.5% last year, and the latest data shows 22 out of every 100 new active domains in the US are running WordPress. This means WordPress is actually growing in popularity and is grabbing new ground quickly. Additionally, since 3.0, WordPress now requires PHP version 5.2.4 or greater and MySQL version 5.0 or greater. With this update, the WordPress team has also improved the speed of the admin panel. Everything seems cleaner, quicker, and easier to use.

If you happen to work as a freelance developer for WordPress, you should be happy to know that the average hourly rate for a WP Freelancer is about $50.00. That’s some nice coinage!
